U.S. Route 66 was one of the original highways within the U.S. Highway System. The 2,451 mile long highway crosses the western half of the United States from Chicago to the Santa Monica Pier in California. Construction was completed in 1926, and several years later the road was finally fully paved.

The original Route 66 served travelers for more than 50 years and was also known by other names, including "Mother Road," "Main Street of America," and "Will Rogers Highway.

The famous road underwent many improvements and realignments over its lifetime and was completely replaced by segments of the "new and improved" Interstate Highway System. U.S. Route 66 was officially removed from the United States Highway System on June 27, 1985.
