Excellent Kitchen Island, February 8, 2014

We were looking for a big, moveable kitchen island that you could store a lot of stuff in, have a big workspace on top, and use as a serving buffet. The Catskill Craftsmen 1480 Empire Kitchen Island fit the bill perfectly. My wife has lots of kitchen gadgets and appliances and we are able to store a lot of them in this. You are able to store full cookie sheets in this...it is that deep. The dual doors on both sides make it simple to use. The workspace on top is large and actually useable, unlike a lot of those islands you see at the big box stores with the granite inserts. It also makes an excellent serving buffet with the leaves extended...and yes, the leaves can hold a lot of weight (think 6 qt. mixer). Overall, just a great product!

Installation...really not too bad. I did it myself without help, but they do recommend it being a two person job and you'll know if you can't lift the butcher block top that you'll need another person. It was waiting for me on the doorstep when I got home from work and I put it together that same night after dinner. Not the best directions in the world, but the old adage fits...measure twice and cut once. Try to visualize how everything is coming together a couple steps in advance to see where you are heading.

Maintenance...this isn't set it and forget it. Listen, this isn't "finished", stained wood. Go to the store and buy a big bottle of mineral oil and get into the habit of applying it weekly to the ENTIRE island. It is worth the time and effort. You spent a lot of money on it, so protect and care for the darn thing.

Enjoy!
Beautiful island. great cust service, March 25, 2013

I ordered the kitchen island and received it many days sooner than I expected. I was missing one small screw, one wood brace was cracked, and one of the doors had several cracks. The customer service was Great! as all the parts were shipped to replace the damaged parts. The island is a beautiful piece of furniture and it really puts the finishing touch in my newly remodeled kitchen. The only con (somewhat) is that it was a real 'bear' to put together. I do believe the instructions could be re-written to be a bit clearer. I have put alot of furniture items together and I think this was one of the most difficult I have ever put together. However, it was worth it to see the final product. And I LOVE that it is made in the U.S.of A!!!
